Conservation has proven to be a cure for our nasty oceans. In tropical areas where the conservation efforts are high, communities are reporting "healthier and more abundant oceans". To reach a healthy level though, the worlds efforts need to be highly raised. Most marine protected areas are only a thin coastal strip, a mile off the coast. Efforts need to be pushed past the borders of individual countries.

The Time Traveler

By: Katy Butler

We traveled to the year 650 M.A. late Proterozoic era, to the bottom point of what is present day South Africa. But in those days, it was just at the equator, bordering the Panthalassic Ocean. You see, not 10 miles off shore, the sea floor was spreading open. Bubbles of hot gasses were being released, constant mixing of different debris, life was abundant. Not life like we know it of course, but living things none the less. Mostly just sponges, anemones, and annelids. But they were beautiful, and plentiful, and people were hungry. That's why we went back, people were hungry... I agreed on the expedition mostly for the money. I was just another lab technician, nothing special, and I wasn't expecting the food to be great. One day I was in the cafeteria, enjoying a partially gelatinated non-dairy gum-based beverage, I couldn't help but compare the color to the sponges that were being tested on.

Part 3

Proterozoic Era

  • The Earth became a habitable planet (the atmosphere changed, less harsh conditions).
  • Organisms began symbiotic relationships.
  • The living things in the Proterozoic era are split up into 3 categories: sponges, cnidarians, and annelids.
  • There was a short ice age, causing rapid changes to be made.

Age of Bacteria

The Age of Bacteria lasted from 4.5 BYA - 544 MYA. The first stromatolites and earliest cells were being formed in the Archaean period (3,800 M.Y.A - 2,500 M.Y.A). Archaean means ancient. the first fossils of bacteria were found then. In the 1950's Stanley Miller did an experiment where he had a container of water to resemble the ocean, shocked it several times, to mock lightning, and soon, amino acids were formed. Amino acids are widely excepted as the building blocks of life.

In the Proterozoic period (2,500 M.Y.A - 544 M.Y.A) you will find the first algae. In this era you will find fossils of one and multi-cellular organisms. Proterozoic means early life. At this time, most cells were beginning to be eukaryotic. Alot of fossils found from the Proterozoic Era are layered mounds of stuff made of microbial mats.
